Description

The Director of Shelter Operations is responsible for the strategic leadership and operational oversight of HSPPR’s Colorado Springs shelter operations. Create and innovate to assure best practices, lead and collaborate on HSPPR strategic goals, and develop the future state of shelter operations together with the team.


Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Strategically lead and direct the shelter operations teams at the HSPPR Colorado Springs location to ensure the highest level of people care is delivered to staff, volunteers, patrons, donors, partners, and vendors.
  • Support and direct the humane treatment in handling companion animals, including monitoring the adherence to best practice sanitation and treatment protocols.
  • Assure the HSPPR Colorado Springs facility is maintained to provide a safe and sanitary environment for animals and people, including adherence to and monitoring mandated standards (e.g., PACFA).
  • Conduct strategic workforce planning to design an organizational structure that optimizes resources, efficiencies, and productivity and supports staff. Regularly assesses organizational structure for improvement opportunities.
  • With department and program managers, monitor and evaluate program effectiveness across operational departments, including statistical analysis, report creation, and presentation, and implements changes and improvements to ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Develop objectives and plans with department and program managers and assist in developing HSPPR initiatives and programs.
  • Play a key role in developing and evaluating HSPPR strategic initiatives and goals.
  • Support the development of SOPs and ensure management at the department level.
  • Manage external vendors to provide services as needed.
  • With department and program managers, develop and monitor departmental and program budgets, ensuring teams have essential resources needed to meet department goals while maintaining fiscal responsibility and being good stewards of HSPPR resources.
  • Attract, select, onboard, develop, and coach talent with a commitment to leadership development, performance, core values, organizational culture, engagement, diversity and inclusivity, personal and professional growth, teamwork, and succession planning.
  • Develops and fosters collaboration with the Director of Veterinary Services and veterinary operations on animal health and behavior matters.
  • Collaborate with other functional leaders in leading organizational initiatives, strategic planning, and ensuring alignment with core values, vision, mission, and the strategic plan.
  • Represents the organization internally and externally with integrity, serving as an ambassador of HSPPR’s mission and brand.
Supervisor duties:
  • Recruits, supervises, and evaluates direct reports in the performance of their job responsibilities.
  • Coaches staff by providing regular, ongoing feedback and timely performance evaluations.
  • Sets performance standards; directs and motivates employees.
  • Investigates grievances and perform disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Consults with the Vice President of Operations regarding discipline and terminations.
  • Directs and guides staff in situations that require immediate problem-solving.
  • Directs, motivates, and develops direct reports, ensuring effective teamwork and high standards of work quality.
  • Cultivate strong problem-solving skills among staff, including solving problems quickly and creatively.
  • Coordinates with managers and supervisors to ensure proper workforce planning.
  • Supports staff and volunteers, recognizing their contributions to the success of our organization.
  • Provides recommendations for policy/procedural changes for departments and works with managers/supervisors to ensure the implementation of those policy/procedural changes.

Supervisory Duties
Animal Care Manager, Animal Logistics Manager, Behavior Manager, Admissions Manager, and Adoptions Manager

  • Is visible to staff and communicates with Vice President and President/CEO on significant developments within the department.

  • Must be able to relate and confer with the President & CEO, Vice Presidents, Directors, Managers, and associate staff positively and constructively; exercise sound judgment when dealing with the public and when making decisions.

Philanthropy
  • Encourages the use of volunteers and the solicitation of monetary and in-kind donations whenever possible.
Fiscal Responsibility
  • Oversees control of budgets, including approving invoices and preparing financial and statistical reports as needed.
  • Works with Managers to forecast and determine future capital equipment, staffing, and programmatic needs and develops annual budgets.
Staff Management
  • Utilizes performance-based management when counseling and evaluating staff and sets measurable goals for employee growth.
  • Submits evaluations on time and encourages continuing education for staff as it relates to the organization’s needs.
  • Recognizes good performance and counsels staff to correct problems.
  • Regularly meets with direct reports and sets the same expectation for all Managers and Supervisors.
Availability
  • Is flexible with scheduling and is available when away from the facility as needed to meet the organization’s needs.

Schedule Requirements

Schedule may include weekend and holiday work.


Experience/Education Necessary
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, with seven + (7) years of professional experience in animal welfare or an equivalent combination of related education, training, and experience.
  • A Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) designation is preferred.
  • Advanced management and leadership experience in an animal welfare organization/animal shelter.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage change in teams, departments, and groups.
  • Excellent leadership skills and experience in motivating and developing emerging leaders are necessary.
  • In-depth knowledge of animal welfare industry best practices.
  • Proficient in major programs of Microsoft Office 365 such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

This is an exempt position – Salary Range $82,000-$85,000/annually DOE
